Christchurch Gym Owner Moo on why Movement is Life
“Life is movement. once you stop moving, you’re dead. choose life.” Eugen Sandow
“Nothing happens until something moves” Albert Einstein
“Movement is a medicine for creating change in a person’s physical, emotional, and mental states.” Carol Welch
Movement – it’s so simple, yet vital for life.
As we get older, our body undergoes natural changes which is why we need to exercise & move our bodies regularly. I was active right through out school and played a lot of team sport, which I loved but then I left school and I needed to fill that void of Team sport so I decided to join a gym and I haven’t looked back. I am 46 now and have been active all my life and I can’t imagine my life without exercise & just being active.
Working in the Fitness Industry we get to witness how exercise can empower so many to see their strengths, classes turn into communities that support one another and this Christmas Break we witnessed that first hand. Exercise has given so many of us a place where we belong, allowed us to make new friendships and literally for so many of us it has saved our lives.
Movement is life. “Without movement, life is unthinkable.” Well it is for our family.
Our bodies are designed to move in all different directions; we run, jump, walk, swim, bend forward, backwards and so on. It’s movement that gives us healthy joints, strong bones, physical strength, good circulation, including cardiovascular circulation, good coordination and reflex reactivity, improved learning skills and concentration, and mental well-being. Without movement we would deteriorate. In fact, excessive sitting is associated with at least 35 diseases and conditions such as back pain, obesity, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and depression. Countries such as Australia and Canada have declared excessive sitting as a catastrophe.
Think about this……..
Blood cells that don’t move cannot transport oxygen.
Lungs that don’t move can’t breathe.
Hearts that don’t move can’t pump blood
Spines that don’t move can’t create the motion required for proper joint nutrition, for the activities of daily living, or for the stimulation of the joint-brain pathways required for proper brain and body function.
So, you see movement, exercise is what enables our bodies to operate in all of its amazing complexity. How friggen cool is that.
Now we are all aging hahaha yes we are and aging is a process whether we like it or not, we are all going the same way!
In our 20s-30’s we start losing lean muscle mass and our rate of bone-building starts to slow.
In our 40s-50 we start to lose muscle mass and bone-density starts to decrease. Hormonal changes, such as those associated with menopause, can accelerate this process. And yes, sadly our body fat percentage starts to climb.
Then we reach our 60s and older: Bone health becomes very important as osteoclastic activity (the breakdown of bone) rises and osteoblastic activity (the building of bone) drops.
And other changes in our body systems occur.
So in short…..
Cardiovascular exercises such as walking, stair climbing, swimming and bike riding enhance our heart and lung health, build stamina and promote blood flow to our muscles.
Resistance exercises such as weight training and working with elastic exercise bands build muscle mass, promote bone growth and provide stability to our joints.
Random movements performed safely, such as skipping or quick lateral movements while walking, can also boost bone health.
Stretching enhances flexibility, boosts blood flow to our muscles and reduces our risk of injury. Our classes such as Yoga Fix, Pilates Fix & Mobility Fix can promote flexibility, enhance balance and improve posture.
This is why we encourage variety in our Club so much. Integrating cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and flexibility into our training – is so incredibly important.
So, we can choose to move our bodies & enjoy our quality of life or we can choose to sit & rust away.
We choose to move our bodies every single day and LIVE

Bodyfix has got to be the friendliest gym in town—it literally is the place where everyone knows your name! This is a small business run by people who care about their clients—a very different experience to the franchised, big name outfits. The best gym membership I've ever had! Thanks Moo & team! XX
I love going to body fix, the team are very friendly and welcoming. It is the friendliest gym in town, we are always greeted with a friendly smile when arriving, and the staff are always helpful and friendly. This gym is like no other, I feel like I belong and never judged. I love this gym! There are plenty of really skilled trainers who are brilliant at getting results from you. The equipment is excellent, and the atmosphere is friendly but focused, which helps to push you forward. I quit my last gym for this one. Both have a similar low weekly price, but Bodyfix delivers the goods!Highly recommended!
Totally professional about being personal, fantastic team and feel privileged to be part of. The equipment is always in top condition and the cleanliness of the facilities are 2nd to none. all this and more for less than the price of a flat white a day.
Very friendly environment. Excellent group fitness for beginners like myself and also for the advance! Engaging staff. Overall great gym atmosphere. Very happy highly recommend.
I have belonged to a few gyms in my life and this gym by far has the friendliest staff. Lexi on front desk always greets you with a smile and remembers your name. The owner Moo always sends out caring texts. I feel like this gym actually cares about you and your well being, not that you are just another membership number! Love belonging to Bodyfix!
Bodyfix absolutely rocks! The classes are hands down the best I've ever come across - challenging, motivating and fun. Totally love the staff - they genuinely care about each member. I would totally recommend this gym to anyone who likes to work hard when they work out :)
