Where My Fitness Journey Started

The last time we did my success story was when I was 50. So 4 years on & my journey is still continuing. I am proud to say I have lost close to 20kg and weighing in around 70kg.

I can honestly say 4 years on and I have totally taken ownership of my health & wellbeing. So I will share with you what has happened since my story 4 years ago.

I had a medical condition that I was unaware of. I said to Steve who trains me ‘Steve there was something wrong with me and he suggested that I get to the dr. So I went to Dr and had some tests and my bloods taken and it came back I had an overactive thyroid and I was put on medication which then made me put on weight. I knew my weight had also gone up.

So I went back to the Dr he weighed me and I was 90kg and also found that my blood pressure was high, it was then he advised that I needed to lose weight.

So then the process started I had to get medical treatment for my overactive thyroid. I was given a radioactive drink and was in quarantine for 5 days. There was a 30% chance of going under active and of course yip you guessed it I did.

So its taken 6mths for all of my medication and levels to come right I go to visit the Dr regularly and he weighs me and shakes my hand and he is just bewildered about how well I am now.

So now in my 50’s, I got perimenopause and was not happy about how I was feeling and looking and I was like I am not giving up, I am going to lose my weight. If I want to have a long, happy, healthy life I am so determined to do it and no one is going to stop me.

So what has changed?

So I asked Steve for advice and we talked about food & also about portion control. I had to take photos of my food and he would tell me if my portions were to big. So I made some changes there. I now eat before I get hungry so I never allow myself to be hungry. I will admit I was an emotional eater and I have now slowly changed my mindset and my habits.

How did I know what to eat?

Well, it is common sense really and also amazing tips from Steve and everyone around me. I went from having a dinner plate to a side plate. I have a treat meal every Monday night and with sweet being my poison I make sure I enjoy a good bit of cake once a week. It is important to know that you aren’t going without so not denying myself and being okay with that. This picture is my prep for the week!

How did my exercise change?

It is my passion I love it! I am a creature of habit. My week consists of Spin, Zumba, Move Fix and my PT Session with Steve and I fit in 2 sessions in the gym working on toning as the Team at Bodyfix will tell you it is just as important as Cardio.

I am so happy I now I have a core!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know I have always had a core but this is one I can see and feel.

My Tips?

So one big thing I swear by is variety, keeping it fresh. For me, it is my health first and everything else just falls into place. Find something you love and it is not a chore!

What have I learnt?

Fitness definitely is a journey and it is for a lifetime and I am not giving up. Never give up on your body it is so forgiving. It has forgiven me for what I have put it through and therefore my self-esteem has changed. I am a much more positive outgoing person than before. I am aware of myself and the changes and now it is about keeping myself in check.

For years I was in denial and did not want to be weighed, now I am happy to be made accountable and I love to analyse and track my progress.

Thank you to everyone at Bodyfix, my spin buddies (Leah & Alex) & the Team for looking after me. To my PT Steve for not treating me any differently because of my age. Thank you so much. To my partner, Tony and his support over the years have been amazing and it has never waivered!

I am so lucky to be here sharing my story with you all and being part of the Bodyfix Family.

What Steve Has To Say:

Bernadette is so dedicated and so bloody motivated. There is a quiet determination, strength of character & a stubbornness about Bernadette that not many people hold. She always turns up and she never gives up! When she shows up for training she just gets on with it.

I have been with her for years now and to watch her journey and be part of this as her Trainer has been amazing. Bernadette is an inspiration to all of us!
