Picture this…

Saturday 15th January 2011, 6.30pm at night, sitting by Lake Wanaka drinking gin and tonic and smoking cigarettes watching the half and full ironman competitors coming in to cross the finish line…

Can you guess what happened next… That’s right, I got a little caught up in the moment, totally inspired and made a vow to:

  1. Give up smoking
  2. Give up drinking
  3. Take on a personal trainer
  4. Complete the Wanaka Half Iron Man in 2012 (That is a 1.9km Swim, 90km Bike, and a 21.1km Run – Of these disciplines I could swim so I had A LOT of work to do)…

At the time of committing to this I was single, and had just started a new job – little did I know that a week later I was going to meet the man of my dreams, that my job was going to be as full on as it was (a lot of travel) and that there was going to be many speed bumps along the way…

Long story short, Gave up smoking (still smoke free now), Gave up drinking (still drink free now,) Signed up with a personal trainer straight away and then the earthquakes happened – Trainer left town. Signed up with a new personal trainer who just wasn’t what I hoped – dumped him, signed up at pioneer and while that was great no one knew what I was aiming to do so was given no push or encouragement, gave up on going there… At this point I started doing research and had been recommended to come and see Reece at Re:Create who worked out of Bodyfix… and I can happily say that these guys have been my HEROS!!!!! I had finally found somewhere that was going to help me get to my vow… YAHHHOOOO

18 weeks out from my race I met with Reece and made the commitment to train with him 3 times a week along with a lot of other training… Another speed hump – Skin cancer scare and no training for 2 weeks… ARRRRGGGGHHH… 16 weeks out from my race I then started training with Reece and another speed hump… Strained my Quad whilst training with Reece – yes there were tears – Sorry Reece!!… It was at this point that I started doubting whether or not I was actually going to get to the start line but thanks to Reece for believing in me and the team at body fix for their constant encouragement it happened…

On Saturday 21st January 2012 I crossed the finish line for the Lake Wanaka Half Iron man and what a GREAT feeling that was… I had such a great day out and am very very greatful to all the people that helped me get there… Had I not found Reece and the amazing team at Body Fix Gym – I would have got to the Lake Wanaka Half Iron Man but I would have been doing what I was doing the year before and just watching. After completing this I gave myself a little break and then decided to take a look at what I could do so that I could keep exercise an important part of my daily routine…

I had heard the city to surf being advertised and I can honestly say that I would not have done it had it not been for the team at Bodyfix… For every person that entered the City to Surf the team at Bodyfix contributed $5.00 to Ronald McDonald house… This really got me as a 14km Run is nothing to what those poor kiddies have to go through so I eneterd and what a great turn out we had… 40 people from the Gym turned up and I am sure every cent counts for those wee kiddies at Ronald McDonald house… GREAT WORK!!!

I don’t know about you but I love to make exercise an important part of my day otherwise I am like a bear with a sore head and I like to have variety… I spend at least 4 sessions a week at the gym taking part in Boot Camp and Circuts and then do some outside activities also…

Body fix is such a great place to come, the people, encouragement and variety they have available is what keeps me going… Thanks team and keep up the awesome work…

I will leave you with this quote that my late Mum once said to me:
“Believe in yourself and believe you can do anything that you put your mind to. Set yourself goals and know that you can achieve them if you put your heart into it”
